NOTE: I originally posted this article in the summer of 2020 when there were out of control wildfires in the Western US. Now in June 2023, the Northeast and Midwest US are feeling the effects of wildfires hundred/thousands of miles away in Quebec and Nova Scotia, Canada.

Somehow experiencing the poor air quality and “orange” skies first hand (even without the threat of the fire itself) makes this all the more real. Staying indoors or filtering yourself from the particulate matter is first and foremost…however it’s good to know that there are some nutritional supports to consider as well.

Annual wildfires in California, Colorado, Oregon and other areas in the western US, result not only in terrible loss of human and animal life, forests and property, but people (and animals) are also left dealing with tremendous environmental pollution.

The gases and particles that wildfires produce can be extremely irritating to the sensitive mucosal lining of our lungs. (Other parts of the body like nasal passages, eyes, GI tract also have mucosal linings.) People with respiratory issues like asthma or allergies are particularly vulnerable to this air pollution and the resulting oxidative stress and inflammation.

What Does Nutrition Have to Do with Wildfires?

In addition to minimizing your outdoor exposure during the wildfires, healthy nutrition can help counter the potential health effects of the gases and particles that the wild fires produce.

It’s important to eat a healthy whole foods diet rich in phytonutrients — a food component with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In plain language, eat a Mediterranean type diet, with lots and lots of colorful fruits and vegetables, healthy fats (like nuts, seeds, olive oil), whole grains, fish, limited amounts of red meat (grass fed is best) and dairy and few or no processed foods.

While healthy food is most important, targeted nutrition supplements, such as the master antioxidant glutathione, or its precursor NAC (n-acetylcysteine) can provide addition support. A boswellia supplement is also supportive of mucosal linings such as of the respiratory tract.

This article provides a review of some of the key nutrients that play important roles in the body to manage oxidative stress and inflammation from pollution.

Pollution and respiratory disease: can diet or supplements help? A review, Respir Research. 2018; 19: 79.

Abstract
Pollution is known to cause and exacerbate a number of chronic respiratory diseases. The World Health Organisation has placed air pollution as the world’s largest environmental health risk factor. There has been recent publicity about the role for diet and anti-oxidants in mitigating the effects of pollution, and this review assesses the evidence for alterations in diet, including vitamin supplementation in abrogating the effects of pollution on asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases.

We found evidence to suggest that carotenoids, vitamin D and vitamin E help protect against pollution damage which can trigger asthma, COPD and lung cancer initiation. Vitamin C, curcumin, choline and omega-3 fatty acids may also play a role.

The Mediterranean diet appears to be of benefit in patients with airways disease and there appears to be a beneficial effect in smokers however there is no direct evidence regarding protecting against air pollution.

More studies investigating the effects of nutrition on rapidly rising air pollution are urgently required. However it is very difficult to design such studies due to the confounding factors of diet, obesity, co-morbid illness, medication and environmental exposure.

In the 1930s, a dentist from Ohio {Westin A. Price, DDS} travelled the world to study the diets of indigenous peoples who exclusively ate local traditional foods. He compared their glowing good health, excellent bone structure, and mental stability to the Americans of his day, who were suffering from dental problems, mental illness, allergies, arthritis, asthma, heart disease, diabetes, digestive disorders and cancer.

What Dr. Price discovered:

  • Traditional diets contain abundant vitamins and minerals, especially vitamins A, D, and K2, found in seafood and the fat and organ meats of grass-fed animals.
  • When indigenous people adopted processed and denatured foods such as white flour, sugar, canned foods, vegetable oils, and pasteurized milk, they developed the same chronic diseases that plague us today.

Wise Foods for Healthy Families

GOOD HEALTH IS OUR BIRTHRIGHT
Natural immunity, vitality, normal growth, an optimistic outlook, a keen mind, good bone structure, straight teeth and freedom from cavities, cancer, heart disease and chronic illness—this is our legacy when we eat foods provided by nature.

MODERN FOODS DESTROY OUR HEALTH
Most chronic diseases—including mental and behavioral problems—are caused or exacerbated by modern diets. Evidence continues to mount linking chronic diseases with modern foods. Yet much nutritional advice today falsely promotes the consumption of processed food and makes us afraid to eat our ancestral foods.

ANIMAL FATS ARE ESSENTIAL
Our bodies require nutrient-dense animal food, especially animal fats, for good health, generation after generation. Our cells, bones, brain, heart, lungs, kidneys and reproductive organs all require the nutrients found uniquely in animal fats to function properly.

WISE FOODS WILL RESTORE YOUR HEALTH
By consuming nutrient-dense foods, we can restore our own health and provide the gift of good health to the next generation.

A TRUSTWORTHY SOURCE OF INFORMATION
Our materials and website provide scientifically sound articles on the benefits of traditional foods based on research untainted by agribusiness and pharmaceutical industry money. We provide practical advice for returning nutrient-dense foods to family diets, and our local chapter leaders can help you locate healthy foods close to home.

Wise, Healthy Foods

• Butter, cream and whole raw milk
• Organ meats, such as liver
• Pasture-fed meats, dairy and eggs
• Wild fish, shellfish and fish roe

• Organic vegetables and fruits
• Traditional lacto-fermented foods
• Healthy lacto-fermented soft drinks
• Homemade bone broths
• Properly prepared whole grains and traditional sourdough breads
• Unrefined salt

Foods to Avoid

• Low-fat and fat-free products
• Modern soy foods
• Pasteurized, homogenized milk
• Margarine and trans fats
• Processed vegetable oils
• Dry breakfast cereals
• Artificial sweeteners and additives
• Fast foods and sodas
• Refined sweeteners and fruit juices
• White flour products
• Factory-raised meats and farm-raised fish

Surprising Food Facts

• Animal fats do not cause heart disease, cancer and obesity but actually protect us against these conditions.
• Modern soy foods contribute to thyroid problems, digestive disorders and endocrine disruption.
• Low-fat diets can lead to many health problems, including emotional instability.
• Vegetarians do not live longer; vegan diets do not protect against cancer and heart disease.

Wise Foods for Sustainable Farms, a Clean Environment, and Local Prosperity

NON-TOXIC FARMING in healthy, mineral-rich soil produces food that is free of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and hormones.

PASTURE-FED LIVESTOCK are healthier animals that live outdoors eating green grass and soaking up sunshine to produce more nutritious meat, milk, eggs, and fat.

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE depends upon millions of small family farmers who thrive by selling locally, who bring prosperity to rural communities and who also maintain open spaces for future generations.

BIODIVERSITY is maintained through crop rotation and natural pest control as compared to the monocultures and soil depletion typical of large industrial farms using genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

LOCALLY GROWN FOOD reduces transportation costs, traffic, packaging waste, pollution and dependence on foreign oil, while providing fresher foods and healthier local economies.

LOCAL VALUE-ADDED products such as cheese, butter, raw milk, sausage, bone broth, artisan sourdough breads and healthy lacto- fermented beverages and condiments bring prosperity to small towns and rural areas.”

How Farmer’s Markets are Beneficial to Consumers: Beyond Nutrition (and some nutrition facts too)

by Gabrielle Bilik
Westchester Wellness, Vol 1, No 2, July 2018

I was interviewed by Westchester Wellness magazine about the benefits of farmer’s markets and the changing quality of our food supply.

Exerpt:

Janet Zarowitz, a certified dietitian-nutritionist, based in Ossining, shed some more light on the biological effects of diet. Zarowitz holds a Master of Science degree and did her training at Cornell and Columbia Universities. She is a practicing CDN of 25 years and for the past 10 she has been involved with integrative and functional nutrition.

Functional nutrition is when nutrition is used to address the underlying issues in the body that might cause sickness or other symptoms, she explains.

“For example, people get headaches so they may take pain relievers for the headache,” she says, “but that addresses the symptoms. It may make them feel better short term but it doesn’t address why they may be getting the migraine. Is it a food sensitivity? A hormone imbalance? A digestive problem? Address the problem, so ideally you don’t get the migraines anymore, or you get them less.”

Many symptoms she sees in her clients she attributes to the food supply.

“Anecdotally, that’s been my experience. I believe that our food supply has diminished our soils,” says Zarowitz. “They are not as rich in nutrients anymore. Some of the pesticides that are used actually bind minerals in the soil so if they’re binding [those nutrients] we don’t get them.”

Genetically modified foods have had their DNA manipulated in order to demonstrate certain traits such as delayed ripening or thicker skin to withstand long journeys. According to the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Environmental Science these types of modifications can increase productivity and yield for farmers.

“There are two main categories of genetically modified crops,” Zarowitz says. “Some of them are made to resist pesticides and some of them are genetically modified to actually produce insecticides.” While she said she can’t speak to the economic benefits of the practice, she personally believes gentically modified foods affect human health.

“When you eat those foods it also affects the bacteria in your gut,” she says. “It’s very antibacterial and changes the balance of the bacteria in your gut.”

While digestive issues are common among her older clients, she said that she sees more and more people in their 20s and 30s for digestive issues. While she can’t positively say it’s the sole cause, she believes pesticides are a contributing factor.

“If you think about it we’re a living organism and we interface with the outside world. Other animals, air and bacteria in the soil— everything. What’s our exposure to the outside world? Our skin and our gut.Think about it — if you open your mouth you’re totally ex- posed to the outside world.”

EMFs and Cancer: Reducing Impact, Using Nutrition https://mysupplementrd.com/protect-yourself-from-effects-of-emfs-nutrition/ Fri, 23 Mar 2018 13:53:20 +0000 https://mysupplementrd.com/?p=5986 The post EMFs and Cancer: Reducing Impact, Using Nutrition appeared first on The Nutrition Supplement Dietitian.

Our Wi-Fi world poses some potential serious health consequences to all of us … the major concern being cancer induction.

The World Health Organization has classified EMFs as Group 2B Carcinogens which means they are possibly cancerous.

The National Institutes of Health found an increased occurrence of rare brain tumors (gliomas) and rare heart tumors from exposure to microwave radiation from cell phones

The majority of cancers are initiated by damage to a cell’s DNA/genetic chromosomes, leading to changes in cellular function and cell death.

Wireless technology such as that found in cell phones, emits a type of EMF or non-ionizing electromagnetic field.

Infants and young children, even the unborn are most vulnerable to EMFs.

So how can You reduce your exposure to Wi-Fi?

Here are some simple tips to reduce your exposure to Wi-Fi while staying connected:

  • Keep your smart phone on “Airplane” mode most of the time.
  • Do not work with a laptop/iPad on your lap.
  • Unplug everything in your bedroom at night.
(Your brain is most vulnerable to EMFs during sleep.)
  • Use a wired Ethernet connection for Internet on your laptop (rather than Wi-Fi).
  • Use a headset that is not wired (wires attract and amplify EMFs)—use an airtube headset, instead.
  • Replace your wireless devices with wired versions.

From a recent article in Total Health Solutions:

“A recent study sent shockwaves through the scientific community. In May 2016, the U.S. codes, of the National Institutes of Health, released the results of a $25 million nine-year study. The results found an increased occurrence of rare brain tumors (gliomas) and rare heart tumors from exposure to microwave radiation from cell phones.

More than 230 scientists from 41 countries have expressed their “serious concerns” regarding the ubiquitous and increasing exposure to EMF generated by electric and wireless devices. They refer to the fact that “numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF affects living organisms adversely well below the levels that international and national guidelines deem safe.”

Effects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, DNA damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general wellbeing in humans. Damage goes well beyond the human race, as there is growing evidence of harmful effects to both plants and animals.”

Nutrition and EMFs

We are still learning about this area, but eating a generous amount of a variety of fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants may offer some protection against EMFs.

Include cruciferous vegetables (e.g. brussels sprouts, broccoli, bok choy, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, broccoli, endive) and lots of colorful plant foods rich in phytonutrients like cherries, oranges, carrots, beets, tomatoes, spinach.

Eat fatty fish, nuts and seeds rich on omega-3 fatty acids and maintain a healthy gut and digestive system.

Many nutrition supplements are antioxidants such as glutathione, NAC, curcurmin, quercetin and vitamin C.

How Soil Health Affects Your Health https://mysupplementrd.com/soil-foundation-nutrition/ Tue, 02 Jan 2018 19:07:45 +0000 https://mysupplementrd.com/?p=5928 The post How Soil Health Affects Your Health appeared first on The Nutrition Supplement Dietitian.

Healthy Soils for a Healthy Life.

Lest we forget that we as humans are part of the earth’s ecosystem. We get our nutrients from the plants and animals we eat (many of which eat the plants too) and the water we drink.

If the soil is malnourished, then we too will suffer.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations focused on how “Over 2 Billion People Suffer from Micronutrient Deficiencies.”  Many soils around the world, including many in the US are suffering from declining nutrient content.

For example, this illustration from the FAO highlights 18 nutrients necessary for both plant growth and human health — both Micronutrients like zinc, iron, calcium, copper, manganese and Macronutrients like phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium.

The good news is that sustainable soil management practices such as crop rotation, reducing erosion, and increasing soil organic matter content, also preserve nutrients.

In the meantime, until there is a turnaround in the nutritional value of our soil, I will continue to use a foundational multi-vitamin/multi-mineral product with most of my clients.

Soil quality affects the plants grown in the soil, many of which we eat directly; it also affects animal products that we eat — cows, chickens, etc., as they eat plant foods too.

Here are a few professional grade multivitamin/multimineral products that I recommend:

Did you know that most multivitamins don’t contain much of the mineral magnesium? That’s because it’s a very large molecule and takes up too much room!

A stand-alone magnesium supplement that I like is Pure Encapsulations Magnesium Citrate, because it is a low dose, making it easy to increase incrementally.

Pesticides Affect Our Gut Microbes Too

While the FAO focuses on micronutrient deficiencies, the use of pesticides and other chemicals has radically changed the microbial content (soil microorganisms) of our soils. This affects the microbial balance in our GI tracts which is thought to have far-reaching affects on our health.

In addition, exposure to pesticides on foods can alter the diversity of the gut microbiome. Some species are more sensitive to the toxic effects of pesticides and decrease in number. Other species are more tolerant to pesticides and proliferate more as there is less competition for space and nourishment.

My “go-to” probiotic for gut microbiome support is MegaSporeBiotic.
