PureGenomics Nutrigenomics Consultation

Consultation with Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Janet Zarowitz, MS, RD, CDN
Using Genetic Clues to Optimize and Personalize Nutrition

Nutrigenomics uses genetic clues to customize and optimize your nutrition.

Your consultation will include a review of your SNPs, discussion of signs of their expression, and a nutrition protocol to optimize the potential weaknesses of your SNPs.

The PureGenomics Report covers genes and nutritional supports related to:

  • vitamins, minerals
  • detoxification pathways
  • weight management and metabolism
  • cardiovascular health
  • GI health
  • cognitive health and memory
  • immune health
  • energy and fitness
  • glucose metabolism
  • antioxidant and cellular defense
  • methylation pathways
  • new nutrigenomics reports are being added

Your PureGenomics consultation can be in-person in the Westchester, NY office or remotely via telehealth (phone or video chat).

What’s the Methylation Pathway?

PureGenomics Nutrigenomics addresses the most important research-based Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs or unique variations) in the methylation pathway. These SNPs can be supported with nutrition and nutrition supplements. This individualized nutrition solution, was developed under the guidance of Nathan Morris, MD and Kelly Heim, PhD.

For example, PureGenomics Nutrigenomics analyzes SNPs in the following genes in the methylation pathway and identifies nutritional supports for each:

  • MTHFR  (A1298C)
  • MTHFR  (C677T)
  • CBS  (C699T)
  • COMT  (V158M)
  • FUT2  (G772A)
  • MTR  (A2756G)
  • MTRR  (A66G)
  • TCN2  (C766G)

Why is Methylation so Important?

Methylation is indispensible for your body, for:
  • homocysteine clearance
  • neurotransmitter production
  • hormone detoxification
  • amino acid production
  • utilization and assimilation of vitamins
  • DNA synthesis
  • gene regulation.
SNPs in the methylation pathway are surprising common. More than 50% of the population have one or more key methylation SNPs.

Because they are so prevalent, the PureGenomics Nutrigenomics approach may help many people. This may be particularly true for people whose medical issues have not fully resolved after exploring solutions with their physicians.

Note: SNPs represent potential.  Not all SNPs are expressed in an individual. A person’s genetic makeup provides additional clues that may explain an underlying factor that affects his or her health.

How the PureGenomics Nutrigenomics Consultation Works

1. You order the saliva-based personal genome analysis kit from 23andme or ancestry.com

2. My office will sign you up for the PureGenomics analysis of your 23andme or ancestry.com genetic data.

3. PureGenomics will send you an email so you can upload your genetic data.

4. Janet Zarowitz’s office will set up a consultation appointment time for you to discuss your PureGenomics report with her.

Folate 1000 Metafolin® L-5-MTHF

Targeted Support for MTHFR SNPs in the Methylation Pathway
Based on Nutrigenomics

Naturally occurring, universally metabolized form of folate (Metafolin® brand)

Metafolin® is chemically identical to the active folate metabolite, 5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF). This is the predominant, naturally occurring form of folate in food.

This form of folate is directly usable by the body because it bypasses several enzymatic activation steps. Metafolin provides all of the benefits of folic acid regardless of functional or genetic variations.

The L-5-MTHF active form of folate is important for individuals with a MTHFR variation — A1298C and/or C677T. People with MTHFR SNPs may have a reduced ability to activate folic acid to the form that the body can utilize.

Genetic variations affecting activation and metabolism of supplemental folic acid are highly prevalent.

Each capsule of Pure Encapsulations Folate 1000 Metafolin contains 1000 mcg. of folate.

Folate – Essential for Cellular Health

An extensive body of evidence indicates that adequate folate intake may provide significant cardiovascular, cellular and neural protection.

Metafolin L-5- MTHF, can be directly used in a diverse array of essential methylation reactions.

Adequate folate status is critical for nucleic acid synthesis and neurotransmitter synthesis. At the molecular level, the main function of folate is to donate methyl groups in key biochemical reactions occurring in blood cells, neurons, the vasculature and many other tissues.

Manufactured and formulated by Pure Encapsulations, Sudbury, MA.

P-5-P (Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate) Activated Vitamin B6

Supports the Methylation Pathway

This supplement provides 50 mg. of activated B6 (pyridoxal-5-phosphate), the predominant form of circulating B6.

People with genetic variations in the CBS gene may have an up-regulation in this gene. Thus they may have an increased requirement for P-5-P.

Why P-5-P, the Activated Vitamin B6 Preferred?

P-5-P is the special form of Vitamin B6 that your body can easily utilize. It’s the activated form of B6. In fact, the other forms of B6 have to first be converted into P-5-P in order for their bodies to be able to use it.

The forms of Vitamin B6 that have to be converted into P-5-P in order to be utilized as a coenzyme are: pyridoxine, pyridoxal, or pyridoxamine.

Conversion of non-P-5-P forms of Vitamin B6 to P-5-P occurs in the intestinal absorptive cells or the liver.

But what if this conversion is not optimal? This can be the case in older adults, people with impaired liver function or those with GI issues, (e.g. celiac disease or GI inflammation).

Vitamin B6 in its active form (P-5-P) is the form that the body can most readily utilize.

Physiological Roles of Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 plays many key roles in the body. For example Vitamin B6 is needed for:

  • amino acid metabolism and neurotransmitter production and detoxification
  • proper absorption of vitamin B12 and magnesium
  • production of gastric acid needed for digestion and gut microbial health
  • production of antibodies and red blood cells
  • energy production in the liver and muscles
  • metabolism of carbohydrates and fats
  • maintaining sodium and potassium balance (Na:K balance regulates body fluids and promotes the healthy functioning of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems.)
  • reducing pain and inflammation in early stages of carpal tunnel syndrome

Manufactured and formulated by Pure Encapsulations, Sudbury, MA.
