What is L-Theanine?

L-theanine is an amino acid that is found in the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). It’s a relaxing amino acid yet does not reduce alertness during the day.  L-theanine has been found to promote more alpha brain waves, a type of brain wave produced when you’re relatively calm, relaxed and not overly focused. L-theanine can enhance the production of several neurotransmitters. It plays role in the formation of GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid), a neurotransmitter that helps us modulate and handle stress.  L-theanine has been used in Japan for many years.

L-theanine is a helpful adjunct for both stress management during the day and for getting settled in for sleep. L-theonine supports a relaxed, yet alert, state of mind without sedation.

What is GABA?

Our bodies naturally make the neurotransmitter Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain where it can have anti-anxiety effects.

GABA also seems to decrease blood pressure. Take this into consideration if you are also taking herbs or supplements that may also potentially lower blood pressure as this might cause your blood pressure to go too low.

200 mg of Zen – Suggested Use

As a dietary supplement, 1 or 2 capsules daily between meals, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner.

Warning: If taking antidepressants or other psychotropic medications, use only under the supervision of a qualified healthcare practitioner.
Although we are not aware of any interactions, because these also affect brain function there is theoretical potential for negative or positive interactions, either of which would need to be monitored. Keep in a cool, dry place, tightly capped.

My Experience

I take one or two 200 mg of zen about an hour before bedtime. It helps me relax and fall asleep, as well as stay asleep longer without waking up during the night. It does not leave me feeling groggy at all in the morning, upon waking.
