Why Can Your Gut Microbiome Reveal A Lot About Your Health?

Trillions of tiny microorganisms thrive in the gut microbiome, including bacteria, yeast, fungi, and more. This bustling ecosystem drives health, from immunity and digestion to mood, metabolism and beyond.

Every microbe in the gut community has a job. Some break down food and even produce nutrients like vitamin K2, vitamin B 12, folate and other B vitamins.

Some beneficial microbes produce metabolites (like short chain fatty acids) which help maintain a normal level of inflammation in the gut and nourish cells lining the lower GI tract.

Other microbes balance pH, maintain the gut lining and support immunity and a healthy histamine response.

Did you know that the gut microbiome even affects your emotional well-being through the gut-brain axis?   The gut flora produce hormones and neurotransmitters and even recycle estrogen!!!

Every type of microbe has a role in the GI tract. That includes opportunistic microflora as long as they remain in check. However, when biodiversity weakens and optimal balance falters, the entire microbial community is affected, resulting in dysbiosis. The far-reaching effects of dysbiosis often manifest beyond the gut as seemingly unrelated, body-wide impacts.

The BiomeFx™ Stool Kit explores the pathogens in your gut as well as the keystone species that are crucial to overall health and the metabolic functions that rely on the gut microbiome.

The BiomeFx™ Stool Kit report will identify which critical keystone species need to be supported and which potential pathogens need to be rebalanced — through diet, lifestyle, probiotics and supplements.

Integrative Nutritionist Janet Zarowitz, MS, RD, CDN will discuss a plan with you, to help optimize your gut microbiome.

Did Know That Certain Microbes are Associated with Obesity or Elevated BMI?

Yes, certain microbes are associated with metabolism. The gut microbiomes of lean people differ from the gut microbiomes of obese body types. Microbes can affect insulin sensitivity and are thought to be key to the underlying development of Type 2 Diabetes!

Even thousands of years ago, Hippocrates (400 B.C.) was aware of the gut’s key importance to health. Since that time, modern science has supported that belief.

Today healthcare practitioners understand that immune dysfunction (auto-immune, allergies, food sensitivities, histamine intolerance, rashes, psoriasis, eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, etc.) may be traced back to a dysfunction in the GI. So can inflammatory and metabolic conditions also be traced to underlying gut imbalances.

A healthy body starts with a healthy gut.  It’s easy to think of the skin as the body’s barrier to the outside world, but so is the gut.

The gut allows us to interact with the environment (which includes food), taking in what is necessary and beneficial and keeping out (hopefully) what might be unnecessary or harmful.

Today the gut is referred to as the “second brain.” Modern science has shown us that mood, depression and other mental disorders are also connected to gut health. Some gut disorders like IBS are closely linked to anxiety.

As researchers try to uncover root causes of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc, they are also looking to the gut for answers.

Everything starts in the GI.
