Vitamin K is a often misunderstood nutrient. Did you know that there is a Vitamin K1 and a Vitamin K2 and that their roles are very different in the body?

Vitamin K1 is well-known for it’s role in blood clotting. But did you know that vitamin K2 is key to keeping bones strong and arteries clear? Vitamin K2 works closely with Vitamins D and the mineral calcium.

Vitamin K2 has many other functions as well, including increasing cardiac output of oxygenated blood.

Vitamin K2 for Heart and Bone Health, Key Regulator of Calcium Balance

Vitamin K2 directs free calcium from the blood and arterial and joint space deposits and sends it to the bones. If calcium is deposited in the arteries, it could dangerously become incorporated into atherosclerotic plaque deposits.
Most people immediately think of needing calcium and vitamin D for building strong bones but omit vitamin K2.

Adequate intake of vitamin K2 (MK-7) has shown to lower the risk of vascular damage; vitamin K2 activates a protein that prevents calcium from depositing in vessel walls and joint spaces.

Vitamin K2 can improve both cardiovascular health and bone health.

Cardiac Output

Vitamin K2 appears to improve cardiac output by maintaining healthy mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are most dense in muscle tissue, especially heart tissue.

In recent studies, supplementation of Vitamin K2 (MK-7) improved cardiac output by 22% at resting heart rate and 13% at maximum heart rate. This is the definition of performance enhancement.

Cardiac output is defined as the volume of blood pumped, per minute, by each ventricle of the heart. Of all the measures of cardiovascular performance, cardiac output likely has the biggest impact. It is a direct measure of the body’s ability to deliver oxygen to starving muscles.

The main reason that VO2max (measure of maximum ability a person has for utilizing oxygen) declines with age is because the maximal heart rate (max HR) decreases as well. After the age of 30, VO2max will begin to decline. That said, highly trained endurance athletes are better able to reduce the decline of their VO2max.

One of the main reasons that aerobic athletic performance declines with age is that the body becomes less effective at utilizing oxygen.

Another component that determines an athlete’s ability to perform is mitochondrial function and ATP production. Vitamin K2 has been shown to decrease muscle cramping and improve muscle contraction too.

Vitamins K and D Work Synergistically

In addition to its individual benefits, vitamin K also works synergistically with vitamin D to provide skeletal and cardiovascular benefits.

Vitamins K and D both have roles in calcium homeostasis and in bone and cardiovascular health. If you’d like to read more about it, here’s a comprehensive and technical article about the synergy between vitamins K and D.
