Product Description
P-5-P (Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate) Activated Vitamin B6
Supports the Methylation Pathway
This supplement provides 50 mg. of activated B6 (pyridoxal-5-phosphate), the predominant form of circulating B6.
People with genetic variations in the CBS gene may have an up-regulation in this gene. Thus they may have an increased requirement for P-5-P.
Why P-5-P, the Activated Vitamin B6 Preferred?
P-5-P is the special form of Vitamin B6 that your body can easily utilize. It’s the activated form of B6. In fact, the other forms of B6 have to first be converted into P-5-P in order for their bodies to be able to use it.
The forms of Vitamin B6 that have to be converted into P-5-P in order to be utilized as a coenzyme are: pyridoxine, pyridoxal, or pyridoxamine.
Conversion of non-P-5-P forms of Vitamin B6 to P-5-P occurs in the intestinal absorptive cells or the liver.
But what if this conversion is not optimal? This can be the case in older adults, people with impaired liver function or those with GI issues, (e.g. celiac disease or GI inflammation).
Vitamin B6 in its active form (P-5-P) is the form that the body can most readily utilize.
Physiological Roles of Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 plays many key roles in the body. For example Vitamin B6 is needed for:
- amino acid metabolism and neurotransmitter production and detoxification
- proper absorption of vitamin B12 and magnesium
- production of gastric acid needed for digestion and gut microbial health
- production of antibodies and red blood cells
- energy production in the liver and muscles
- metabolism of carbohydrates and fats
- maintaining sodium and potassium balance (Na:K balance regulates body fluids and promotes the healthy functioning of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems.)
- reducing pain and inflammation in early stages of carpal tunnel syndrome
