What are the Different Types of B12?

- Adenosylcobalamin (adenosyl B12) is an activated form of B12 (similar to methylcobalamin or methylated B12). Adenosyl B12 is the major form of vitamin B12 stored in the mitochondria of cellular tissues and also a key cofactor in carbohydrate metabolism. Optimal levels also support healthy synthesis of the myelin layer of nerve sheaths. For people with one or two SNPs in the COMT gene (+/+ or -/+), adenosylcobalamin is one of the forms of Vitamin B12 that is often suggested.

- Hydroxycobalamin(hydroxy B12) is a precursor form of vitamin B12. It is converted in the body to both methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. Hydroxycobalamin is one of the form of Vitamin B12 that is often preferable for people with one or two SNPs in the COMT gene (+/+ or -/+).

- Cyanocobalamin (cyano B12) is similar to hyroxy B12 but with a cyanide base. The body has to detoxify the cyanide base and rid itself of it.
