Naturally occurring, universally metabolized form of folate (Metafolin® brand)
Metafolin® is chemically identical to the active folate metabolite, 5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF). This is the predominant, naturally occurring form of folate in food.
This form of folate is directly usable by the body because it bypasses several enzymatic activation steps. Metafolin provides all of the benefits of folic acid regardless of functional or genetic variations.
The L-5-MTHF active form of folate is important for individuals with a MTHFR variation — A1298C and/or C677T. People with MTHFR SNPs may have a reduced ability to activate folic acid to the form that the body can utilize.
Genetic variations affecting activation and metabolism of supplemental folic acid are highly prevalent.
