Supports Liver in its Detoxification Function
Milk thistle is an herb native to the Mediterranean. It has been used for liver support for thousands of years. Even today, its leaves and flowers are eaten as a vegetable, and its seeds are roasted as a coffee substitute.
Silymarin comes from the seed of the milk thistle and is the active constituent. Scientifically speaking, it is a bioflavonoid complex made up of silybinin (about 70%), isosilybinin, silychristin, and silydianin. These flavonoids help support the liver’s important role in detoxification.
Pure Encapulations Silymarin is a highly concentrated extract of the silymarin found in milk thistle seeds.
Silymarin nutritionally supports healthy liver functioning by:
- protecting the liver from free radical damage
- supporting glutathione concentrations (very powerful antioxidant found in every cell)
- promoting the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD – enzyme involved with innate/nonspecific immunity).
Milk thistle extract also stimulates protein synthesis in liver cells.
Researchers are looking into milk thistle’s possible effectiveness for other conditions, such as diabetes, liver diseases and certain types of cancers.
Note: Milk thistle speeds processing of medications (and other compounds) through the liver. This may alter the effects of medications and possibly their dosage needed for treatment. If you are on medications, especially ones whose dosage is critical, consult your physician before taking milk thistle.
