N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is an amino acid precursor to one of the most important antioxidants in the body, glutathione. Antioxidants protect us from free radicals and the damage they can inflict on our cells and DNA. Both glutathione and NAC help reduce the viscosity of the mucus allowing for clearing of the airways and improved respiratory health.
As we age the body is less able to create glutathione on its own.
It is estimated that at age 40, there is a loss of glutathione production of about 30%; at age 65, the reduction of glutathione production is as much as 50%.
In addition, environmental factors such as tobacco smoke, pollution, poor diet, genetic inefficiencies, and use of prescription and/or over the counter drugs (especially acetaminophen) can further compound the loss of glutathione.
